“demm, ilma” explores Maltese heritage through a visual family tree.
Malta is a Mediterranean Island, and water connects it to all places of my belonging -
Europe, Asia, and North Africa. In tying old images together to tell a story, I am inspired by the women in my family – and the knitting/lacemaking maestros of the Island.

Aside from the Vatican, Malta is probably one of the smallest and most Catholic countries
in the world, and these religious influences are visible in the work.
There is also a hint of Arab-Islamic influence, as the initial settlers in Malta were the Phoenicians (from modern-day Lebanon, Syria and Palestine), and there are similarities between the Maltese language and Arabic.

I dedicate the work to Grandma, Dina - my Mother figure in this life, and the reason I’m so proud to be Maltese.

The focus is identity and heritage, which is so important to me as someone from a Mixed-Religious, Mixed-Heritage background; it is crucial to show people like me that there is space for us in the Creative Industries.
